DURHAM, NC – Duke Energy has awarded the Boys & Girls Clubs of Durham and Orange Counties (BGCDOC) with a $10,000 grant to support science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) activities. For several years in a row, Duke Energy has been a huge supporter of STEM programming at BGCDOC. This funding will support the continuation of BGCDOC’s STEM Friday programming, which occur year-round during the after-school program and summer camp. STEM Fridays are designed to engage students in STEM subjects through fun and interactive projects and activities such as planting seeds, baking cookies, engineering miniature bridges and catapults, and learning about chemical reactions.
Data shows that many Boys & Girls Club members struggle with STEM subjects, but when given the opportunity to learn with hands-on experiences and fun activities, they are extremely interested. The activities expose many students to things they’ve never seen before, and they are able to apply aspects of STEM to their everyday lives. The ultimate goal of the STEM Fridays program is to increase student interest in STEM subjects, leading to higher academic performance, participation in the classroom, and interest in STEM careers.
