Durham, NC – (February 1, 2024) Nearly 100 members of local, state and federal executives from around the state, rallied to volunteer for a day of giving at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Durham and Orange Counties for what area leaders are calling a ‘mission critical’ cause; North Carolina’s youth.
“As the chairman of the BGC Winston-Salem advisory council, I believe it’s imperative that law enforcement participating in the NCBLS in Durham this week, partner with the local Boys & Girls clubs, which is a safe haven in many communities around the nation for our youth,” said Dr. Pamela Peoples-Joyner of the Winston-Salem Police Department.
Peoples-Joyner alongside leadership from the Salvation Army BGC of Winston-Salem, Durham County Sheriff’s department, US Marshalls office and countless volunteers participating in the annual NC Black Law Enforcement Symposium, gathered at BGCDOC for after school activities that included tutoring, games, and mentorship.
“Our presence today is to not only work towards bridging systemic cultural gaps between law enforcement and young people, but to simply carve out devoted time to help enable these children, our children, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, and responsible citizens,” added Peoples-Joyner.
What truly enables BGCDOC however is not only volunteers, but secure funding.
“We are a non-profit organization serving more than 100 children daily at this center alone, and in order to execute this service mission, we need businesses to allow the most vulnerable of society, our children, to glean from their generosity where possible,” said BGCDOC CEO Jerome Levisy.
The organization is inviting committed and future donors to its annual great futures fund-raising breakfast on Thursday, May 9, 2024, at the BGCDOC facilities. Those wishing to give, volunteer and attend can send a message of intent online here.
